Diabetes in Portugal. Pandemic reduced disease screening

On the day that the results of the most recent study by the National Diabetes Observatory, constituted by the General Directorate of Health, were published, RTP Notícias spoke with ICBAS professor and Coordinator of UMIB – Multidisciplinary Biomedical Research Unit, Mariana Monteiro.

In Portugal, around 1 million and 100 thousand people have diabetes, “worrying numbers that place us in the top 3 in Europe”. For the UMIB Coordinator, this reality was worsened by the pandemic: “both face-to-face consultations and screenings decreased by around 50%, which increases the likelihood of complications related to the disease”.
