  • Admitted to Coimbra University Medical School, in September 1998, with the classification of 19,5/20.
  • Graduated in Medicine, by Coimbra University Medical School, Portugal, in October 2004, with the final grade of 16,03.
  • PhD in Medical Sciences by Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, Oporto University, in May 2016.
  • General Internship at Hospitais da Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal, from 01/01/2005 to 25/03/2006.
    – Nephrology Fellowship from 26/03/2006 to 4/08/2011 at Hospital Amato Lusitano, Unidade Local de Saúde de Castelo Branco, EPE, Portugal.
    – Nephrologist degree since 05/08/2011, with the final grade of 18,7.
  • Clinical activity as a Nephrologist, in an outpatient Hemodialysis Unit since 2011, providing care to more than 100 patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5D.
  • Medical Director of an outpatient Hemodialysis Unit (NephroCare Covilhã, Portugal), since 1/09/2011 to 30/09/2017.
  • Medical Director of an outpatient Hemodialysis Unit (NephroCare Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal), since 1/01/2018.
  • As responsible for the technical direction of Unit, she is responsible for the treatment of more than 130 chronic kidney disease patients under hemodialysis, guaranteeing compliance with several medical protocols, as well as with company legal protocols regarding the proper functioning of the dialysis water treatment device. She also promotes the training of medical staff, including the development of scientific and research activity.

Pre-graduated education
• Monitor in the discipline Renal Physiology, at Beira Interior University Medical School, in 2006/2007.
• Assistant in the discipline “Nephro-urinary and Reproductive System”, at Beira Interior University Medical School, since 2014.
• Invited Assistant Professor at Beira Interior University Medical School, since 2016.

Post-graduated education
• Member of the Faculty of the “Up-date course in Peritoneal Dialysis”, since 2010.
• Coordinator of a workshop about Chronic Kidney Disease in the “III National Congress of General Internship” in October 2014, at Beira Interior University.
• Member of the Faculty of two Training Courses on Renal Care for Nurses provided by NephroCare Portugal in March 2017 and July 2019.
• Medical Consultant as Nephrologist to the Clinical and Therapeutical Governance of FMC Deutschland GmbH since 2020. Development of several medical educational contents regarding “Introduction training in dialysis for non nephrologists”, in order to improve knowledge and skills of physicians working in NephroCare.

Current research interests
• Clinical research on nutritional care in end stage renal disease patients on dialysis (haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis).
• Clinical research on metabolic impact of peritoneal dialysis, investigating the potential effects of glucose in metabolic outcomes in this population.

• Prize Raul Martins 2010, awarded by the Portuguese Society of Nephrology to the published clinical investigation “Overweigth rather than malnutrition is widely prevalent in peritoneal dialysis Patients” (Bernardo AP, Fonseca I, Rodrigues A, Carvalho MJ, Cabrita A. Advances in Peritoneal Dialysis, Vol.25, 2009).

• Prize Raul Martins 2011, awarded by the Portuguese Society of Nephrology to the best scientific manuscript published in 2011 in Peritoneal Dialysis field. The distinguished scientific work is entitled “Peritoneal membrane transport phosphate status: a cornerstone in phosphate handling in peritoneal dialysis,” (Bernardo AP, Azorin S., Bajo MA, Del Peso G, Ossorio M, Cabrita A, Selgas R. Clin J Am Soc Nephrol 6: 591-592, 2011.)

• Prize Raul Martins 2012, awarded by the Portuguese Society of Nephrology to the published clinical investigation “Two-in-one protocol: simultaneous small pore and ultrasmall-pore peritoneal transport quantification” (Bernardo AP, Bajo MA, Santos O, Del Peso G, Carvalho MJ, Cabrita A, Selgas R, Rodrigues A. Perit Dial Int 32(5): 537-544, 2012).
